krummholz

  • (No English equivalent: the German term is commonly used). Gnarled or stunted tree or group of trees. This term refers to two growth forms: (1) trees with genetically curved, prostrate stems, as for example Pinus mugo var. prostrata, Pinus pumilio; (2) stunted, crippled trees which grow on mechanically stressed sites, e.g. wind-exposed sites.
