  • The process whereby certain trees or shrubs in a community become weakened, essentially through competition with neighbours or through other ecologic factors, such as erosion, insect infestation, etc. (natural suppression), but also through human intervention, e.g. lifestock browsing (artificial suppression). (Ford-Robertson 1983)
