uniformitarian principle

  • Applied to dendrochronology, this principle implies that the physical and biological processes which link today's environment with today's variations in tree growth must have been in operation in the past. It is the fundamental justification for the use of dendrochronology to infer past conditions. (≈ Fritts 1976, Van Deusen 1988)
