Landschaftsdesign - ein neuer Hoffnungsträger in der Landschaftsforschung.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 7-12.

Abstract
Landscape design - new hope for the future of landscape research. Current landscape change is perceived as dramatic and some changes proved to be rather destructive. Landscape research intends to describe and understand the system. Often the resulting knowledge arrives on the practical level with a considerable time shift, i.e. when major landscape functions have already been altered by large projects. In this article I pose the question if current changes in science and technology may lead to new directions in landscape research and eventually foster a wide application in both rural and urban systems. The latter are - as shown in our literature review - a still neglected entity in landscape research. The discipline still favours rural systems. In practical landscape development technical measures to mitigate drawbacks are more popular than careful planning. In the scientific literature the idea of introducing "design" as an element of landscape research has recently emerged. In this case landscape research

Landschaftsfragmentierung und ökologische Vernetzung - Probleme und Lösungsansätze.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 13-22.

Abstract
?Landscape fragmentation and ecological connectivity - problems and approaches for solutions. Switzerland's landscape is divided into three characteristic regions: Jura, Central Plateau and Alps. In the last decades increasing housing developments and transport infrastructure along with intensified agriculture have destroyed the traditionally developed cultural landscape particularly in in the Central Plateau. Habitats for fauna and flora have been diminished and fragmented. The cultural landscape has been degraded, trivialized and has lost its emotional value for people. In order to mitigate landscape fragmentation, several concepts and strategies were developed on a legal basis. Considering ecological valorisation and landscape connectivity, we emphasise the Ordinance on Ecological Quality (Ökoqualitätsverordnung ÖQV), the restoration of supra-regional wildlife corridors and the National Ecological Network (Réseau Ecologique National REN). Their application and implementation do not only increase the

Landschaftszerschneidung und Biodiversität: Barrieren oder Ausbreitungswege?

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 23-30.

Abstract
Landscape fragmentation and biodiversity: barriers or migration corridors? In recent decades, Switzerland has experienced extensive urbanisation. Urbanisation destroys, alters and dissects natural and semi-natural habitats, and at the same time, also creates new habitats. Transport infrastructure is a prominent component of urban land-use, and road and traffic densities are generally high in urbanised landscapes. Several studies indicate a general fragmentation effect of roads and traffic on populations of animal species, due to inaccessibility of resources, increased road mortality and subdivision of populations. Traffic infrastructure and their verges, however, often provide new habitats for plant and animal species. They are characterised by a high amount of non-native species, but are also valuable habitats for endangered species of agricultural landscapes. In addition, they act as migration corridors for non-native and native species and, in combination with urban habitats, facilitate the biological inv

Potentiale und Grenzen ökonomischer Instrumente bei der Lenkung der Siedlungsentwicklung.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 31-35.

Abstract
Potentials and limits of economic instruments to influence the development of settlement areas. Increasingly, the non-sustainability of Swiss spatial development is recognised. This non-sustainability includes ecological, economic and societal dimensions. One reason for the observed development is planning which - so far - has been the main approach to influence spatial development. Linked to planning are - as reasons for the non-sustainability - the systematic deficits and problems of planning and the only partial application of the planning instruments. Given this situation, since about one decade economic instruments to tackle land use problems have been discussed and developed, namely taxes, duties and tradeable use permits. Following the theory, these instruments can improve the efficiency of land use, however, the empirical proof is difficult - also because of little or partial application. Due to the specificities of soil/land, there is far reaching consensus that the economic instruments can not repl

Agglomerationspolitik und Landschaft: Ansätze aus der Praxis.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 37-42.

Abstract
Urban agglomeration policy and landscape: some practical approaches. Until today, the urban agglomeration policy of the Federation has not considered landscape explicitly. Different instruments and approaches developed in the last years can increasingly be applied for the requirements of landscape development. Among them are notably the agglomeration-programmes. The Federation can also support innovative approaches with model-projects. Finally, it is important to establish institutions of responsibility at the level of the agglomeration to address landscape questions.

Abstract
What expectations do residents have from their living environment? Prerequisites for need-oriented planning with regard to content and procedures. In spite of explicit formulatins in planning laws the call for including the needs of the residents is hardly implemented in planning practice. Essentially, this has to do with the nature of humans' needs which are to a wide extent socially and individually constructed and thus not easily accessible to measurement. For a need-oriented planning two informations are insufficiently available: a) knowlegde about the residents' objective requirements regarding their immediate surroundings and b) insights about the conditions under which residents are prepared to express their requests and ideas of enhancing their residential environment. Our empirical investigations addressing these issues in different study areas revealed that there is in fact a general cluster of relevant objective requirements regarding the residential environment. Striking within these results was

Partizipative Planung in der Praxis: Das Beispiel Landschaftsentwicklungskonzept Uster.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 55-58.

Abstract
Participatory planning in practice: The Example of the landscape development concept of Uster The city of Uster worked out a comprehensive landscape development concept in two stages in the years 2003 and 2005. In this way all aspects relevant to the landscape were clearly laid out and a guideline was compiled to assess those activities that affect space. In the elaboration process we took care to get the directly affected people involved but also the policy makers and the local people at large. With this procedure we were able to convince the agricultural land users in particular of the project's benefits and to reach a political consensus about the objectives. Thanks to the discussions in an open and fair atmosphere, people of all areas concerned were able to find solutions that all could accept and support.

Integrale Standortförderung Knonauer Amt.

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 59-65.

Abstract
Integrated Location Promotion in "Knonauer Amt". Greater Zurich is continually expanding. This has affected the district "Affoltern am Albis" in particular. The region, which is also known as "Knonauer Amt", has been growing for many years faster than any other in the Canton of Zurich. Continual improvements in public transport and the motorway connection currently being built between Zurich and Luzern have attracted more and more people to the area. The local district and communal authorities recognised this trend early on and decided to cooperate on an integrated promotion of the location. This foresees cautious growth of the population and economy, with the best possible protection of the landscape and environment.

Eine Strategiekarte für die nachhaltige Entwicklung im Knonauer Amt - Synthese des Forschungsprogramms "Landschaft im Ballungsraum".

Ballungsräume für Mensch und Natur. Forum für Wissen 2008: 67-74.

Abstract
A Strategy Map for sustainable development of the Knonauer Amt region - synthesis of the research programme «Land Resources Management in Peri-Urban Environments». This paper presents the development of a tool for strategic decision-making in regional development and, at the same time, for the synthesis of a multidisciplinary research programme. In a case study region, experiencing the construction of a new motorway, we adopted the tool of Strategy Maps from business administration to the question of regional development. The municipal presidents seek for economic profit from the new motorway, but want to preserve the ecological values and the high quality of life in the region. The vertical alignment of the Strategy Map shows how relevant actors shall organise themselves to improve important land use and political processes in the region to get high performance in visible indicators of sustainable regional development. We integrated the knowledge generated in the projects of the research programme, primar
