Abstract
Landscape services: a feasible concept for research and practical implementation?
In the last decade, the concept of ecosystem goods and services has become a
widely adopted assessment framework in research and practice. Recently, several authors have advocated spatially explicit service assessments at the landscape scale and promoted the concept of landscape services. As a result, the latter is increasingly being adopted by designers of landscape and spatial planning concepts. As the ecosystem service and the landscape service concepts are so closely related, I treat them as identical in my presentation. Despite being used widely, both
concepts are criticized for not being able to deliver proper monetizing
methods and for lacking knowledge transfer. In my presentation I provide a short overview of the current state of the debate and discuss deficits and pitfalls of the concepts. I conclude that certain points that meet with criticizm in the debates are indeed justly criticized and need improvement. The c

Abstract
Landscape observation Switzerland (LABES): A concept for long-term
monitoring.
Landscapes are the result of the interaction between nature und human activities, tradition and culture. Continuous change is characteristic of landscapes. The Landscape Observation Programme LABES (2007-2013) provides a framework to monitor landscape changes with a set of 39 indicators that cover the following thematic areas: finances; land use; habitat; landscape aesthetics; air, noise and light; structure; water; housing quality and identity. The project LABES is the product of a 30-year-long process in which older, newer and most recent surveying methods are integrated.

Abstract
The furnished landscape: signs, benches, and other human-made landscape objects in the everyday landscape.
In the periurban Swiss landscape we observe many human-made landscape objects such as benches, signs and bins for dog droppings ("robidogs") that seem to indicate land uses that are not represented in available data sources. In order to address this issue, we studied kind and frequency of human-made objects in 48 randomly selected 1-km2 plots in the Canton of Aargau. With fieldwork all human made objects not contained in the topographic map LK25 and the aerial-photo were recorded. Settlement areas within the plots were excluded from the sampling. We recorded 860 objects in 77 classes. There are a few classes with many objects (e.g. 196 benches) and many classes with one or two objects. Nine use categories were identified with recreation and infrastructure being the most important ones. Overall the research showed that the Swiss periurban landscape is furnished with human-made objects. Knowledge about t

Die Bedeutungen der Landschaft für den Menschen: objektive Eigenschaft der Landschaft oder individuelle Wahrnehmung des Menschen?

Abstract
The meanings of the landscape for people: objective characteristics of the
landscape or people's individual perceptions?
Landscape is important for people because of the meanings it has for them. Thus, meanings are not "services" of the landscape itself, but a "product" of the human-landscape interaction. The meanings are sometimes individual and situation dependent, but the inter-subjective agreement is usually high due to a universal, deep-rooted basis for landscape preference. Moreover, what is often under-
estimated is that landscape-related cultural values tend to be spatially widespread and temporally stable. This means that landscape-preference theories and related empirical findings can be used as a basis for landscape-development strategies and planning measures for large regions. When focusing on the landscape development of small areas, such as single municipalities or neighbourhoods, specific investigations will be needed, which will certainly be more reliable than expert evaluations.

Abstract
The relevance of lanscape for human health - results from recent WSL studies.
In two experimental studies we analysed the influence of different nature types (forest and agricultural land) and treatment conditions on self-reported human well-being in a pre-post design. In study 1 we compared the 4 conditions: walk in a wild or a tended forest area, presented by real exposure or in the laboratory by video. The tended forest effected well-being more positively in some aspects that the wild forest. In study 2 we compared 3 conditions: extensively and intensively managed agricultural lands and a control condition (walk without nature stimuli) and found no differences between the experimental conditions. The evaluation of an intercultural garden project (study 3) revealed that the garden-related knowledge of gardeners had increased significantly during the course of the project.

Abstract
Visualizing landscapes and projects: technical possibilities and sensible
applications.
The media confront us on a daily basis with 3D visualizations of possible future changes to our environment. However, we seldom understand what processes are involved in selecting particular technical tools for visualization, let alone what the effects such visualizations may have on the people watching them. These tools have been all too quickly adopted by marketing people and project developers, who are unlikely to have much idea of their likely impact on viewers. To ensure future visualizations can be used as valuable tools for conveying designers' ideas, several factors need to be addressed. The most important of these are: the kind of visual language used in the visualization, the points of view taken in particular scenes, the degree of realism of the visualization, the corresponding reactions of viewers, and the medial environment in which the visualizations are used. Special consideration needs to be given to iss

Abstract
Virtual landscapes for participative planning of landscape development - Application and value of 3D landscape visualisations in planning workshops.
High quality landscape development requires an adequate balancing of various interests in the landscape. Participative planning can support this negotiation process but good communication is mandatory. This study shows how effective current 3D visualisations are for communicating the required spatial information. We measured the 3D visualisations' effectiveness in participative planning processes according to the level of various supporting functions, e.g. for information processing or for achieving objectives of different planning phases. The effectiveness was tested in case studies using qualitative social-empirical research methods. The results show that the different strengths of both abstract and realistic 3D visualisation types are required in participative workshops. They are especially efficient for motivating stakeholders and for enlarging the inform
