The need for action in protective forests has to be assessed according to uniform criteria over whole Switzerland. Prerequisites for this assessment are the assignment of National Forest Inventory (NFI) plots to vegetation units. Because the herbaceous vegetation has not been recorded on the NFI plots, the vegetation units have to be modelled on the base of existing vegetation records from other places, climatic variables, surface parameters, soil parameters, etc. The second aim of the project is to predict the development of Swiss protective forests at a scale of some decades.
