Giovanni Leonelli Dr. Giovanni Leonelli

PostDoc at ARPA Valle D’Aosta (Public Environmental Agency), Italy
The first time that I visited the WSL was in 2005 when I started a scientific collaboration with Paolo Cherubini for my PhD studies in dendroclimatology and dendroglaciology.  My main research  interests are on the study of biogeographic and geomorphological dynamics in the Alpine environment, especially focussing on climatically driven spatio-temporal variations of tree vegetation and physical elements of the landscape.  The studies that I developed at WSL mainly focused on tree-growth responses to climate and on the relationships between tree growth at high altitudes and the mass balance of some Alpine glaciers. At present I work in an environmental agency (ARPA Valle d’Aosta), studying treeline dynamics and tree-growth sensitivity to climate in the Alpine environment. Soon new research on tree rings and air pollution in high mountains will be initiated in collaboration with the WSL.

Fabio Lombardi Dr. Fabio Lombardi

PostDoc at the University of Molise, Italy
Work done and in progress in collaboration with the WSL:
Dendroecology:
Tree rings used to asses time since death of dead wood in mediterranean ecosystems.   Comparison of dead wood decay between mediterranean and austral ecosystems (Tierra del Fuego, Chile);C/N, cellulose and lignin content in relation to wood decay in apenine forests.
Dendroecology and ecophysiology: Tree growth and photosynthetic rates in relation to volcanic eruptions in Chile (Lonquimay volcano).

PhD Student at the University of Genoa, Italy
Research Title: "Box dendroecology (Buxus sempervirens L.) in the hinterland of Sestri Levante (GE. NW ITALY)"
Dendroecology has been used to find out how Buxus sempervirens reacts to the climate change and to the land use; moreover it's been analized the traditional usage of boxwood, such as with alternative medicine and art.
