The Research Unit focuses on the question how the sensitive boundaries of terrestrial ecosystems respond to (anthropogenic) environmental changes and management. In particular, the Unit analyses the causes and effects of changes in the biodiversity and function of high mountain ecosystems above and below the high elevation tree line, of the special ecosystems in the insubric lake-region south of the Alps, and of the terrestrial–aquatic boundary in floodplain forests and wetland systems. Reconstructing the history and modelling the dynamics and the processes in boundaries provide important clues for risk assessment, understanding the regional effects of past and current management and climate changes, and predicting the effects of future climate scenarios.
The Unit has partners both within WSL and the wider scientific community. Stakeholders are mainly the forest and agricultural services, nature conservation, forest owners, regional and federal agencies.
