Ozone and Heavy Metals

Reactions of coniferous and deciduous trees in the context of above ground (ozone) and below ground (heavy metals) pollution

Aim of the project

Wurzeln nach Ozon- und Schwermetallbelastung
Roots after stress caused by ozone and heavy metals

The following questions/hypotheses will be answered: Are the effects of ozone in the air and heavy metals in the soil independent (additive) or do they reduce or reenforce each other?

Hypothesis 1
  • Airborne stress => cell injury in the leaf => reduced photosynthesis => reduced root growth => 'starving’ of the roots through missing carbon.
Hypothesis 2
  • Soilborne stress => cell injury in the roots => signal substances => reduced growth by water shortage => closure of the stomata and by this reduced ozone uptake. Are there common mechanisms of cell injury or signal substances? Which bioindications and new methods are useful for research with woody plants and applications in the field?
