The forest enterprise BWW, which is managed by a staff member of the research unit, represents an important interface to applied forestry (forest owners, forest service). It is a model unit for answering questions about operative and strategic forest management. The research forest allows:

• Field-research, management experiments and mainly long-term ecological research studies
• Development and validation of planning, management and inventory methods.
• Knowledge transfer, extension activities and excursion area in the vicinity of WSL

The following activities are currently running:

• Two forest yield plots
  
• Validation of strategic planning tools (dynamic energy wood map, nutrient accounting model)
  
• Investigation of the financial investment and yield loss in groundwater protection zones.
  

The new contract with the forest owners will allow the assessment of new methods of information management in forestry and be a basis of mutual collaboration between WSL and forestry practice.
