Snow Avalanches and PreventionDr. Jürg Schweizer
The Research Unit does researches on the formation and dynamics of avalanches and develops prevention and early warning systems for alpine natural hazards, by combining novel scientific and technical developments with the unit’s intimate knowledge of the practice’s needs. The hazard analysis, as well prevention, mapping, forecast and warning belong to the central tasks of the unit. The research concentrates on the areas of remote sensing, terrestrial measurements and observer networks, on forecast procedures, and on methods for risk analysis and risk management. The prioritary goal of all its research efforts is the reduction of risks form natural hazards. The unit operates the Swiss Avalanche Warning Service. The research unit is in need of close cooperation with the other research units active in natural hazards, snow and permafrost at WSL. Beyond this in-house cooperation, the unit collaborates with university and industry partners in the areas of forecast, remote sensing (GMES), GIS, engineering and risk management, as well as with international natural hazards warning services, communal, cantonal and federal authorities, professional organizations and institutions responsible for public security and tourism.
