SLF exchange with India
India is regularly associated with heat, spicy food, masses of people – and avalanches? Although not a phenomenon that immediately springs to mind, Indian avalanches are part and parcel of everyday life at the moment for SLF employee Yves Bühler. At the beginning of April 2012 he left Switzerland with his family to work for three months at the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) in Manali.

Investigating snow avalanche dynamics at the full-scale test-site: Vallée de la Sionne / Valais
A new Swiss test-site for avalanche experiments has been built to study the overall dynamic behaviour of dense-flow and powder-snow avalanches and to measure avalanche impact forces along their path. The site began operation in 1997/1998 and is a milestone of avalanche dynamics research at the WSL-SLF.

The Rescue Compass: a new avalanche rescue decision-making tool
Various accidents have shown that rescuers can be endangered in the aftermath of avalanche accidents. For this reason, the SLF has responded to an initiative of ICAR (the International Commission for Alpine Rescue) by joining forces with various partners to produce a Rescue Compass for professional rescuers – a weatherproof manual together with a checklist in the form of a dial. It is a practical risk management tool for use in the field.

Remote Sensing - the view from above
Remote Sensing instruments on airplanes, helicopters or satellites are getting more and more important for natural hazard research. They can acquire up-to-date, high resolution imagery shortly after a disaster strikes even within poorly accessible areas. We investigate at the SLF how such sensor systems can be applied for future tasks.

Digital Elevation Models in high alpine terrain
Numerical simulations of natural hazards are based on digital terrain models. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of different remote sensing based technologies to generate such terrain models for high alpin regions.

AVALUATION - Estimating the Economic Value of the Avalanche Bulletin
Last winter we did an opinion survey on the avalanche bulletin. The results show that most of the respondents assumed the bulletin to be helpful or even very helpful in their decision making about avalanche danger.

Risk concept of the PLANAT
Alpine dwellers and visitors are likely to be exposed to avalanches, rockfalls, floods and landslides. For decades, safety experts have been seeking to prevent such natural hazards with civil engineering works, but the focus of their strategy is now shifting towards minimising risk.

Avalanche catching dams
Information on the expected volume and flow velocity of the avalanche are used to estimate the necessary dam height by a rule of thumb. However these estimation requires expert knowledge to judge the influence of factors such as terrain structure, expected flow characteristics of the avalanche and dam geometry in a proper way.
