SLF-Winterberichte
SLF-Winterberichte

Hazard mapping in Mattertal VS: Data acquisition and numerical modeling of debris flows
The Mattertal

Avalanche detection – Is automatic detection possible?
Avalanche detection

The SLF is testing and refining a variety of techniques for detecting avalanches automatically. The goal is to develop an avalanche detection system that is capable of operating in any visibility and delivering information concerning avalanche activity in a specific section of terrain to avalanche warning services and safety authorities.

Lawinenkartierung Davos - Avalmap
Avalmap

Unrivalled data collection – avalanche accidents in the Swiss Alps
Unrivalled data collection – avalanche accidents in the Swiss Alps

The very extensive destructive avalanche database, which is without parallel worldwide, now contains 14,000 records. The existence of this collection facilitates the retrieval and analysis of accident data, as necessary for the publication of accident reports for example.

AVALUATION - Estimating the Economic Value of the Avalanche Bulletin
Survey Avalanche Bulletin

Last winter we did an opinion survey on the avalanche bulletin. The results show that most of the respondents assumed the bulletin to be helpful or even very helpful in their decision making about avalanche danger.

Measuring and Modelling the Snow Distribution on Wannengrat, Davos
Snow distribution

Investigating the spatial and temporal variability of the alpine snowpace is vital for the assessment of avalanche danger as well as the calculation of hydrological resources in an alpine watershed. This variability of the snowpack is governed by snow drift through wind and by the localised energy balance of the snow surface. SLF use the Wannengrat fieldsite to measure these drift parameters and then use them to develop and verify the numerical drift model in the ALPINE3D surface process model

Lawinengefahrenkarte für die Codelco Andina Kupfermine in Chile
Chile

Numerical simulation of flexible rockfall protection systems
FARO

The developed software FARO enables a more efficient development or optimization of new types due to a reduced number of expensive prototype field tests. In addition, the use of software provides the possibility to simulate projected barriers considering special load cases, which cannot be reproduced in field tests, as well as special geometrical boundary conditions for individual sceneries.

How much snow is lost to sublimation?
How much snow is lost to sublimation?

How much snow sublimates and is returned to the atmosphere in the form of water vapour? Field measurements, numerical modelling and wind tunnel experiments provide new discoveries.
