Software Forge
Software Forge

The Snow Cover and Micrometeorology Research Group develops its various numerical models on the software forge models.slf.ch. This forge is first and foremost a virtual place where the models are developed. Each project hosted on the forge has a code revision control repository, a documentation wiki, a download area, an issue reporting system and a code review system.

Snowscat on an Aerial Tramway
Snowscat

SnowScat is a scatterometer developed by GAMMA and sponsored by ESA. It is able to make 3D tomographies and analyse the snowpack in detail without digging a pit. Eventually Snowpack will be used on satellites to be able to analyse larger areas.

Modeling of avalanche release processes
Modeling of avalanche release processes

Models can help us to better understand the driving parameters of avalanche release. We use two main kinds of models: Continuous models based on the finite element method and discontinuous models based on the discrete element method.

Decadal hydro-glaciological forecasts for the Swiss hydropower sector in high mountain catchments
Decadal forecasts

The project assesses how decadal predictions can be used for middle-term forecasts in the hydro-glaciological context. The aim is to support achieving the goals defined in the Swiss EnergyStrategy2050.

Snow on steep permafrost rock walls
Permafrost rock walls

How does snow influence the temperature of frozen rock walls? A novel combination of measurement and modelling techniques is being used to determine snow distribution and its impacts on the underlying rock in extremely steep terrain.

The Dischma experiment: how does interaction with the atmosphere determine the depositing and melting of snow?
The Dischma experiment

What are the processes determining wintertime snow deposits in Alpine terrain? How does the energy balance of a thinning snowpack shift in springtime conditions? And why do some patches of snow persist longer than others?

FORHYCS: A tool for integrated investigation of Forest and Hydrology Change in Switzerland
FORHYCS: A tool for integrated investigation of Forest and Hydrology Change in Switzerland

A hydrological model is coupled to a forest model to better assess the influence of changing drivers to forests and the hydrological cycle

Assessment of snow pressure damage to the Turren chair lift in the Lungern–Schönbüel ski resort during winter 2011/12
Snow pressure damage Turren chair lift

In the winter of 2011-2012, a gliding slab of snow weighing around 20,000 tonnes pushed over one of the pylons carrying the Turren chair lift. The SLF was commissioned to examine the damage and seek ways of preventing similar occurrences.

Practical guideline on the of solar panels on snow supporting structures
Guideline solar panels

The idea of installing solar panels on snow supporting structures has been growing in popularity in recent years. When planning such solar power plants, it is essential that the functional integrity of the avalanche defence structure is not impaired. In conjunction with the Expert Commission on Avalanches and Rockfall (EKLS), the SLF has formulated a set of recommendations containing specifications and criteria to be considered for the installation of solar panels on avalanche barriers.
