HEPS4Power - Extended-range Hydrometeorological Ensemble Predictions for Improved Hydropower Operations and Revenues
Ensemble predictions

Within the National Research Program Energy Turnaround (NRP70) the project HEPS4Power explores the use of extended-range hydrological ensemble predictions systems (HEPS) for improving the operations and revenues of hydropower systems. Therefore monthly to seasonal forecast will be tested and novel post-processing and verification methods will be developed.

KliWaWa - Klimaabhängiges Wachstum für Waldentwicklungsszenarien
KliWaWa

Die Schweizer Waldwirtschaft wird wegen dem Klimawandel mit veränderten Wachstumsverhältnissen im Wald konfrontiert. In diesem Projekt sollen die Beschreibungen der Umweltabhängigkeiten für die Modellierung des Baum- und Bestandeswachstums verbessert werden. Der Einfluss von Klimagrössen und Stickstoff auf das Wachstum wird mittels vorhandener Datengrundlagen analysiert, voneinander und von weiteren Einflüssen separiert, und Abhängigkeitsfunktionen für Waldwachstumsmodelle werden erarbeitet.

An Economic Analysis of Swiss Wood Markets

In this project, researchers analyse the workings of the Swiss wood markets on the basis of case studies and explain them with the help of economic theories. The results will be used to develop an agent-based model. This should make it possible to develop scenarios for future wood availability and present options for influencing it through economic instruments.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Schweizerischen Hochschule für Landwirtschaft SHL wurde ein Simulationsmodell entwickelt, welches unter verschiedenen Waldbehandlungsmethoden, Holzmarktbedingungen und unterschiedlichen Nutzungsgraden der Baumkompartimente für einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren ermittelt.

Renewable energy production (wind power, hydropower, solar power, geothermal energy, and biomass) is a landscape service with growing importance and high political relevance in Switzerland. The expansion of energy production will have a strong impact on competing landscape services such as agricultural production, recreation, tourism, biodiversity conservation and aesthetics.

Photovoltaic-panels on avalanche protectionconstructions

In Switzerland exist around 600 km of avalanche protection constructions, mainly between 1800m and 2500m of altitude. Two pilot creations in Bellwald (VS) test whether avalanche protection constructions are suited as carriers of photovoltaic panels and for producing electric power. In our project we evaluated with qualitative and quantitative methods how local tourists and local inhabitants perceive these pilot creations and, more generally, to which degree they accept solar panels in different environmental settings.

Die Studie untersucht, wie die Touristen im Grimselgebiet die Landschaft wahrnehmen und beurteilen. Ausserdem wird untersucht, welche künftige Entwicklung der Grimsellandschaft (u.a. Erweiterung der Kraftwerksanlagen) von den Touristen akzeptiert werden würde. Für die Analyse werden Werthaltungen, soziodemographische Merkmale und Besuchercharakteristiken berücksichtigt.

Impact of fuel wood piles on saproxylic beetles

In Switzerland, a strong increase in the demand for energy wood is expected for the next decades. This is likely to have a strong influence on saproxylic beetles (dependent on dead wood). On the one hand, fewer old trees and less deadwood will remain and decompose in the forest, which directly limits habitat availability for saproxylics. On the other hand, fuel wood exploitation might have indirect ecological consequences.
