Geospatial data

  • Have a look at the Earth Science Data Interface at the Global Land Cover Facility, which is maintained by the University of Maryland. This site hosts a huge range of freely accessible satellite imagery.
  • Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) provides access to a number of high-resolution orthophotos that cover the more densely populated parts of the country.
  • The Publishing Network for Geoscientific and Environmental Data (PANGAEA) provides numerous data sets of interest to those working on (palaeo-)climate and environmental change.
  • Oak Ridge Natural Laboratory runs a Distributed Active Archive Center for Biogeochemical Dynamics: lots of data on land cover, climate, and biogeochemical cycles.
  • Near-global coverage of digital elevation data obtained during the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM).
  • Still raining? Check out NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) website for continuous update on precipitation in the low latitudes.
  • If it's still wet, there is the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data of several climate parameters at almost global coverage.
  • The PDS Geosciences Node at Washington University, St. Louis, provides fascinating imagery of planetary geomorphology.
  • For those interested in submarine geomorphology: have a look at the latest version of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey hosts data from the HydroSHEDS project, which provides GIS files of continental-scale drainage networks.
  • Keen on finding palaeoclimatic proxies? Try NOAA's paleoclimatology program, which features data on ice cores, tree rings, corals, lakes, and much more.
