Doctoral Research ProjectDisturbance patterns of the relic virgin beech forest of Uholka-Shyrokyj Luh The goal of my Ph.D. project is to analyse the structure and disturbance patterns of the largest virgin beech forest situated in the Ukrainian Carpathians. It is part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve and constitutes with an area of over 10,000 ha the largest component of the transnational UNESCO World heritage site "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient beech Forests of Germany". To do so I combine two methodological approaches. On the one hand a large-scale sampling inventory was carried out to gain representative estimates of the stuctural characteristics. On the other hand I use stereo high resolution WorldView-2 satellite images to generate a canopy surface model allowing a canopy gap analysis of the whole forest area. The combination of the terrestrial and the remote sensing approach allows for an overall picture of the natural disturbance regime of the virgin beech forest of Uholka-Shyrokyj Luh.
