I am interested in the spatial and temporal dynamics of forest biodiversity. Much of my research is centered around the question how 3-D habitat structure affects species assemblages, distributions and behaviour. To answer this question, I preferably use remote sensing data, particularly Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, as they can provide spatially contiguous and highly detailed information about three-dimensionally complex habitats. I have investigated species diversity and activity of a broad range of taxa in temperate forests and I am using LiDAR for conservation related issues such as the modelling and monitoring of bird habitat suitability. Recently, I have developed a growing interest in the role of 3-D habitat structure for driving dynamics in community composition.
