New avalanche guide

31.01.2012 A new book, published in German, provides useful advice on assessing the avalanche risk and snow conditions, and recognising danger patterns. Written by SLF employees, Lawinenkunde is a guide for beginners and professionals alike. Alongside basic survival information, it gives backcountry tourers, freeriders and snowshoe hikers a rich insight into the latest research and empirical findings. Clearly written and illustrated, the highly practical guide describes how avalanches occur, and explains how best to evaluate the avalanche danger in the field. The book is available from bookstores now (in German only).

Schneeverfrachtung durch den Wind

Within the framework of an international research project, the SLF and its German and Austrian partners are using a radar system to conduct a non-destructive investigation of the snowpack from underneath. The goal is to observe the individual layers of the snowpack and their properties and change over time.
