Abstract
Balthasar Stüssi devoted over 50 years of his life to studying the plant ecology of the Swiss National Park. Due to his indefatigable efforts, we have today a unique set of data, notes and photos documenting, for more than 160 permanent plots, the long-term development of the vegetation in the absence of human interference. Thanks to the initiative of Helena Grämiger and the generosity of Stüssi's heirs, the important scientific estate of Balthasar Stüssi came to the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL in Birmensdorf at the end of 1993. With the financial support of the Swiss National Science Foundation we are now able to analyze and interpret this invaluable set of data, to supplement it with new field data, and to generate new research ideas based on his work.
