Dendroecology
Dendroecology

Tree-Ring Ecophysiological Research
Tree-ring research

Uni Zürich / Paolo Cherubini: The role of tree-ring research in ecology, and answer the following questions: What are the aims and main limitations of the techniques? What are the major findings already achieved? What is the history of the discipline and the present state of the art, and the future challenges and needs of research?

International Geochronolgy Summer School
Chrochronology

Uni Zürich / Paolo Cherubini, Holger Gärtner: Dating techniques: such as numerical methods (radiocarbon, exposuredating with cosmogenic nuclides, OSL, etc.); dendrochronology, Ice-core chronologies, as well as relative methods like soil weathering and Schmidt-hammer technique. Reconstruction of environmental parameters (using dendroecology, stable isotopes, ....) Climate and landscape history. Reconstructing geomorphic processes: Avalanches, mud flows, land slides, rock fall, Forest fires, charcoal identification and dating.

Forest Soils - Functions and Responses to Environmental Changes
Forest Soils - Functions

ETHZ / Frank Hagedorn, J. Luster, L. Walthert: The students are learning and applying approaches to assess carbon and nutrient fluxes in forest soils as well as the impacts of pollutants. In laboratory and field experiments, they are measuring C and N fluxes in soils, the buffering of atmospheric deposition, and plant-soil interactions. The results will be interpreted and discussed in the context of climate change or soil contamination.
