Rapperswil is the regional centre on the upper lake of Zurich. With an area of only 1.72 square kilometers it is the municipality with the smallest territory in the canton St. Gallen. It has a population of about 7500 people.
The beautiful medieval town, also called The Town of Roses, was founded at the beginning of the 13th century. The imposing castle from that time and the Capuchin monastery from 1606 are remnants of an eventful past.
Traces of prehistoric villages have been found. Divers recently discovered a wooden bridge built by the Celts at about 1500 BC. In the year 2001 a bridge leading over the lake was rebuilt.
