SYMPOSIA ABSTRACT:
The recreation resource management literature indicates a gap in communicating, incorporating, and integrating
social and ecological sciences in conceptualizing visitor impact monitoring and management. This panel session
will address some of the challenges and discuss suggestions for a more integrated approach to visitor impact
monitoring and management in parks and protected areas. The panel will focus on three major areas:
(1) current state of affairs in the social and ecological sciences of recreation resource management; (2)
research gaps; and (3) integration of ecological and social sciences for an improved framework of visitor
impact management and management.
