Forest reserve Sihlwald
A forest close to the urban centre is returning to its natural state
Sihlwald, a protected forest of 10 km2 is the largest natural
mixed deciduous forest of the Swiss central plateau. Over centuries, the forest was used
as a source for timber and firewood. Since 1986 forestry has been
abandoned in the Sihlwald and the forest is allowed to develop in a natural way.
Thus a unique natural landscape with
scenic places, stunning views and a great diversity of flora and fauna is
at the doorstep of the metropolitan area of Zurich.
In the Sihlwald there is also a forest learning path and a nature centre which offers forest
excursions, cinema shows, courses, workshops, exhibitions
and an installation for beavers and otters giving visitors an additional opportunity to observe nature.
