Rationale

The expected outcome of ENFORS is a contribution to the sustainable management of forests in Europe. Many of the problems associated with sustainable forest management relate to questions and understanding at the ecosystem and landscape levels, as well as requiring longterm series of data. This is well documented in the special issue of Forest Ecology and Management "Pathways to the Wise Management of Forests in Europe", which concluded with a proposal for developing an "Ecosystem and landscape forestry" (Andersson et al. 2000). This is the reason for the present COST Action E25 to foster the establishment of a network of research sites dedicated to long-term studies of the ecosystem and landscape.

Project aims

The overall objective is to develop the scientific base for, and initiate a European network of sites for forest ecosystem and landscape research of relevance to sustainable forest management. The project further aims at

  1. establishing a database of European field experiments relevant to sustainable forest management, and
  2. elaborating and initiating a common scientific research programme on forest ecosystems focusing on the landscape level and a long-term perspective.
