| 3.05.1495 | Degree of urban sprawl in Switzerland: Quantitative analysis 1940 - 2002 and implications for regional planning | Urban sprawl is an aspect of landscape structure and can be quantitatively described based on the information that is available in geographical information systems (GIS). Urban sprawl is a consequence of various driving forces (e.g., economic conditions, spatial separation of human activities such as working and dwelling) and itself is a driving force of landscape change. The more dispersed urban development happens and the less structured urban development is (i.e., fuzzy boundaries) the more it can be characterized as “urban sprawl” (due to its velocity this development sometimes is called “urban mushrooming”). | 2005 - 2006 |
