Education

Seit 1994: Scientific Colaborator in the section Forest Ecosystems and Risk Analysis, since 2001 deputy head of section..
1993: Ph.D in Remote Sensing/Biometrics, University of California , Berkely, USA.
1988: M.S. in Wildland Resource Science. University of California , Berkeley, USA
1987: Degree in Tropical Forestry. Georg-August Universität Göttingen
1986: Degree in Forestry for Temperate Zones. Georg-August Universität Göttingen

Research Interests

My reseach interests are:

the relation between environmental factors (both biotic and abiotic) and tree growth and tree condition,

the development of models for tree growth, mortality and storm damage,

environmental statistics (i.e. spatial statistics).

Next to the evaluation and analysis of the Swiss Forest Health Inventory and the tree parameters on the Swiss Long Term Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Sites (LWF) (quality check of the data and evaluation of tree variabes and environemental parameters) I examine hourly stem circumference changes and intend to develop models to predict these circumference changes and relate them to actual tree stem growth.

As Chariman of the Expert Panel on Forest Growth of ICP Forests (International Co-operative Progamme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects om Forests) I help to harmonise, evaluate and analyse the tree measurements on the Level II plots of ICP Forests.

I also work to test the application of digital photographs and the semi-automatic prorgamme CROCO to estimate tree crown defoliation (transparency). With the help of CROCO observer differences in tree crown defoliation assessments can be quantified and perhaps differences between countries and teams can be corrected for.
