Wie reagieren Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze auf sich verändernde Umweltbedingungen? Passen sie sich an, wandern sie oder sterben sie aus? Wir untersuchen mithilfe von genetischen Methoden, Experimenten und Modellen, wie Arten mit dem Klimawandel umgehen und wie sich die Biodiversität verändert.
Mit dem Klimawandel, aber auch aufgrund von Landnutzungsänderungen durch den Menschen, verändern sich die Umweltbedingungen für Tiere, Pflanzen und Pilze schneller als je zuvor. An diese Veränderungen können sich Arten entweder anpassen, an Orte mit für sie günstigere Bedingungen wandern – oder sie sterben lokal aus. Anpassung geschieht, indem Arten ihre Eigenschaften, zum Beispiel ihre Toleranz gegenüber Trockenheit und hohen Temperaturen, oder ihr Verhalten verändern.
Wie gelingt es zum Beispiel der Arve, an Standorte zu wandern, die für sie zukünftig geeigneter sein werden als die heutigen? Welche Herkünfte von Baumsamen kommen besser zurecht in einem wärmeren Klima? Um solche Fragen beantworten zu können, wenden wir für unterschiedliche Arten genetische Analysen oder Verpflanzungs- und Auswahlexperimente an. So können wir erklären, wie es zu räumlichen Verschiebungen von Arten kommt und wie schnell Anpassungen an veränderte Umweltbedingungen erfolgen.
Wie kann man Biodiversitätsmuster erklären?
Über lange Zeiträume beeinflussen Veränderungen der Umwelt die Evolution nicht nur auf der Artebene, sondern auch zwischen den Arten. Wir untersuchen solche Biodiversitätsmuster anhand von globalen und lokalen Datensätzen, zum Beispiel zur Verbreitung von Vogel- und Baumarten unter dem Einfluss des Klimawandels, und analysieren entsprechende Evolutionsprozesse.
