Southern Oscillation

The complementary fluctuations in atmospheric pressure at Darwin, Australia and Tahiti illustrate the so-called Southern Oscillation, which is closely related to variations in a number of other atmospheric and oceanic parameters. El Niño is a period of high pressure in Darwin, low pressure near Tahiti, high rainfall near the date line at Ocean and Nauru Islands. During La Niña, tendencies are just the opposite. (EESS)
