Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GHGI)

Switzerland prepares annually a greenhouse gas inventory for reporting under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol. The Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry sector of the Swiss inventory includes, inter alia, data for the forest sector, encompassing carbon stocks and carbon stock changes in above- and belowground living and dead biomass and in the soil. On behalf of the Federal Office for the Environment, the WSL research group Resource Analysis prepares annually data on the carbon balance of the Swiss forest and carries out updates and, if necessary, improvements of the methodology based on expert reviews, new data and new guidelines. Carbon stocks in living biomass, and changes due to growth, harvest and mortality are derived from current national forest inventory data. Carbon stocks and carbon stock changes in dead wood, litter, and forest soil are estimated with the Yasso07 model.
