Early detection of plant pathogens is crucial for successful control management"sometimes making the difference between having a small outbreak or a major loss in the field. For this reason, inspections, surveillance and accurate diagnosis are critical. The nanopore MinION sequencer is revolutionizing sequencing, providing fast the genome of viruses and microorganisms in food safety, medical and animal diagnostics. However, so far there are few reports of its application in forest health diagnostics or research. This project works on optimizing the MinION-based sequencing technology for forest diagnostics. Notable recent successes are: - The new technology was established for RNA and DNA in the WSL plant protection lab - The team developed protocols for sequencing mixed DNA of fungi and insects as multiplex assay and it has implemented a new preparation method for fungal viruses - Currently, we are working on detecting unknow viruses in pathogenic fungi using the MinION
