In vitro demonstration of transmissible hypovirulence.
compatible pairing The virulent (orange pigmented) C. parasitica strain at the left is compatible with the hypovirulent (white) strain at the right. The hypovirus is transmitted through hyphal anastomoses and rapidly converts the virulent strain to a hypovirulent strain.
incompatible pairing The virulent strain at the left is incompatible with the hypovirulent strain at the right. No conversion has occurred and a barrage line with many pycnidia is developing between the strains.

In the compatible interaction of C. parasitica strains hyphal anastomoses are formed. Hypovirus and also mitochondria may be transmitted via these hyphal anastomoses. (SEM photography)

In the incompatible interaction of C. parasitica strains hyphae degenerate in the interaction zone. (SEM photography)
