Recherche au cœur des glaces éternelles: glaciers et calottes glaciaires polaires

Les glaciers des Alpes façonnent notre paysage et jouent un rôle important pour l’énergie hydraulique et l’approvisionnement local en eau potable. Tout comme les régions polaires, ils sont fortement touchés par le réchauffement climatique. Nous étudions ces régions afin de prévoir les évolutions futures.
Lorsque les conditions climatiques changent dans les régions polaires, l'ensemble de la planète s'en ressent. Les courants océaniques qui régulent le climat dépendent de l’échange de chaleur entre les régions polaires et tropicales. Le manteau neigeux polaire joue aussi un rôle important dans le climat mondial, car il réfléchit près de 90 % de la lumière du soleil. À titre de comparaison, l’eau de mer renvoie seulement quelque 30 % dans l’univers.
Lors d’expéditions dans la partie la plus australe du continent et au Groenland, nous examinons le manteau neigeux antarctique et arctique sous toutes ses coutures. En effet, si nous comprenons comment la neige se transforme en glace, nous pouvons reconstruire l’histoire du climat avec plus de fiabilité que maintenant. À l’aide de stations de mesure automatiques, nous enregistrons les données concernant la météo et les vents dans l’est de l’Antarctique. Nous pouvons ainsi déterminer combien de neige s’est accumulée, et à quel endroit. Toutes ces données alimentent notre modèle de manteau neigeux et de bilan radiatif «Snowpack», et améliorent les modèles climatiques existants.
Fondation du Swiss Polar Institute
Afin d’unir les forces dans le domaine de la recherche polaire, nous avons fondé en 2016 le Swiss Polar Institute avec quatre autres institutions. Le but de cette initiative est d’encourager l’étude des pôles et des régions extrêmes.
