Climate-smart forestry directions based on national Forest Inventory data
Climate-smart forestry (CSF) has gained increasing attention in recent years. Yet, a framework to assess forest development with the CSF-criteria mitigation, adaptation and ecosystem service (ES) provision on a national scale is currently lacking. The ClimFin project aims at developing such a framework using indicators on carbon stock, biodiversity, timber production, protection against avalanches and rockfall and predisposition to storm and bark beetle disturbances. We assess how mitigation, adaptation and ES provision develop under potential future forest management scenarios, calculated using the MASSIMO model that, in turn, is based on Swiss national forest inventory (NFI) data. Trade-offs between mitigation, adaptation and ES provision are also evaluated in the ClimFin project.
