Driven by environmental stressors, plants tightly regulate their leaf gas exchange of CO2 and H2O molecules, which strongly alters a plant`s isotopic signature. However, we still lack knowledge on how individual environmental drivers affect gas exchange-related isotope fractionations, hampering the use of isotope ratios in plant materials for better understanding plant adaptation to stressors and for climate reconstructions. Here, we propose a setup of a long-term plant physiological facility, consisting of a unique combination of already available high precision and high resolution leaf gas exchange systems and laser spectrometers to track the impact of environmental changes on photosynthesis and transpiration and thus on C and O isotopes in plants. This versatile infrastructure will allow new innovative and interdisciplinary experiments, will attract valuable collaborations and highly qualified scientists, and will be strongly supportive for the success of future research proposals.
