Daphne cneorum L.

Garland Flower

Thymelaceae

Transversal section

Diffuse- to semi-ring-porous. Pores widely spaced in dendritic, radially orientated multiples. Wide pores occasionally surrounded by smaller, thick-walled ground tissue-like pores and vascular tracheids. Growth ring boundaries generally distinct in wide growth rings, indistinct in narrow growth rings. Parenchyma apotracheal, relatively abundant, generally in uni- to multiseriate, more or less continuous tangential bands, often also in uniseriate terminal parenchyma bands.

Radial section

Simple perforation plates. Spiral thickenings present. Rays mostly composed of square and upright cells, slightly heterogeneous. Ground tissue predominantly composed of libriform fibres and vascular tracheids. (Distinction often difficult).

Tangential section

Rays predominantly uniseriate, seldom biseriate. Average ray height up to 15 cells. Ray cells small round to quite large, axial-oval to rectangular. Ground tissue cells often fusiform.

Key characters

Diffuse-porous, sparsely scattered pores in radial, flamelike groups. Rays 1 to 2 cells wide.
