Transversal section

   
  Diffuse- to semi-ring-porous. Pores generally solitary or in small clusters, encircled by vascular tracheids and parenchyma, forming dendritic bands, very distinct from fibres. Paratracheal parenchyma and also in narrow, uni- to triseriate bands at the beginning of the earlywood. Heartwood vessels with gumlike deposits.
 
 

Radial section

   
  Simple perforation plates. Heterogeneous rays (type 1 to type 11). Fine spiral thickenings in vessels and fiber-tracheids. Mainly libriform fibers, few fiber-tracheids.
 
 

Tangential section

   
  Predominantly biseriate rays, rarely tri- or uniseriate. Average height of multiseriate rays: 8-20 cells.
 
 

Key characters

   
  Diffuse-porous. Flame-like groupings of pores.
