Abstract
Since the foundation of the Swiss National Park (SNP) in 1914, various long-term projects on botanical research have been conducted there, the most significant of which comprises a network of more than 160 permanent vegetation plots. Most of this network was established between 1917 and 1945, and has been maintained by Josias Braun-Blanquet (1917—1938), Balthasar Stüssi (1939—1992) as well as Bertil Krüsi, Martin Schütz and Helena Grämiger (since 1993). The permanent plots are located in alpine swards, sub-alpine pastures, forests, and several special sites. To complement them, permanent plots for lichens (maintained 1923—1956) and bryophytes (since 1954), as well as forest plots (since 1926, 1978 and 1996) have been established. Further long-term observation projects concern the study of factors affecting vegetation (with/without grazing ungulates, changes in stream flow) and of special sites (burnt areas, seeded road verges, avalanche paths).
