The COVID-19 pandemic has catapulted the concept of One Health into the centre of public attention, showcasing how human health is inextricably linked with the health of our planet. In order to understand One Health in a global setting, we require fast and cost-efficient technologies that allow for point-of-care assessments of the interdependency between human and environmental health. In this talk, Lara will showcase several examples where she and her team have leveraged real-time genomics through portable nanopore sequencing in the realms of biodiversity, infectious disease, and water and air quality research: She will talk about her post-doctoral research on the conservation of critically endangered species in New Zealand where she used real-time genomics to non-invasively monitor the kākāpō species, and to rapidly assess a recurring fungal infection in this critically endangered species. Lara will further show how she has established real-time genomics for freshwater monitoring with a focus on zoonotic disease monitoring, and she will present the first results of how her new research group at Helmholtz AI, Helmholtz Pioneer Campus, and the Technical University of Munich uses nanopore sequencing for describing bioaerosols and the virulence of airborne pathogens.

BD-Seminars

The Biodiversity Seminar Series (BD-Seminars) are organized by the WSL Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker that presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcasted online.
