Abstract ¶
Enhancing biodiversity in monoculture-dominated landscapes is a key sustainability challenge. Ten years ago, a biodiversity enrichment experiment was established in an oil palm landscape in Sumatra, Indonesia. The experiment consists of 52 tree islands of varying sizes and planted diversity. Here, I will highlight key findings from the experiment from a multi-scale perspective. In particular, I will present the effect of the experiment on multiple taxonomic groups - from bacteria to birds - at local and landscape scales (alpha, beta, gamma diversity). I will also show how local and landscape properties shape above and belowground diversity. Overall, the results illustrate that understanding restoration success in cash crop dominated landscapes requires a multi-scale perspective.

Biodiversity Seminars ¶
The Biodiversity Seminar Series are organized by the WSL Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker who presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcast online.
