Jan Eitel is a remote sensing ecologist at the University of Idaho (UI) whose research is fueled by his desire to understand patterns and processes of the natural world, and to provide practical tools for sustainably managing the earth’s environment and natural resources.

Activities within WSL Fellowship

My work at WSL was conducted in strong collaboration with Dr. Roman Zweifel. The objective of my fellowship was to develop and test remote sensing approaches for monitoring stem growth phenology including the onset, mid growth, and cessation of stem radial growth. Our results show promise that high temporally (daily) and spatially (3x3 m) resolved satellite imagery could be used for monitoring stem growth phenology at broad spatial scales. Similarly, our work also suggest that more research is warranted to understand the exact mechanisms that drive the relationships between stem growth phenology and canopy properties that can be detected using remote sensing.
