Crown condition assessment in the LWF plots

Project duration

1994 - 2038

Since 1985, the condition of Switzerland’s forests has been monitored by the Sanasilva Inventory. This is based on a systematic sampling programme utilising a network of sample plots. Although the network provides representative results for Swiss forests, its design is unsuitable for cause-and-effect research. The LWF plot sites provide a wealth of ecologically relevant data (including information on soils, vegetation, meteorology, pollutant deposition, etc.). It is therefore important to have reliable information on the condition of the trees at the sample plots. At the same time, the assessment of the crown condition of the trees at the LWF sample plots establishes an important link between the results of this sub-programme and those of the Sanasilva Inventory.

Project objectives

  • to determine the relationships between the condition of the tree canopies and a range of environmental parameters measured on site
  • to establish a link between the LWF and Sanasilva sub-programmes
  • to lay the foundations for a better explanation of the trends recorded in the Sanasilva inventory

Methods

At the start of the programme, a full survey of the crown condition of all trees with a diameter of more than 12 cm is carried out on each LWF plot. This is repeated at regular intervals, using a rolling assessment programme to ensure that the work is spread evenly. An annual assessment of the crown condition of trees with a diameter of more than 12 cm is carried out on a 50 x 50 m sub-plot. The assessment methods are based on those used in the Sanasilva inventory.

Work plan

The surveys have been completed for the following locations: Alptal, Beatenberg, Bettlachstock, Celerina, Chironico, Davos, Isone, Jussy, Lägeren, Lantsch, Lausanne, Lens, the National Park, Neunkirch, Novaggio, Othmarsingen, Schänis, Visp and Vordemwald.

The completed and planned inventories (including the 50×50 m sub-plots) are listed in Table 26.
