FinancingFORest PEATtland ecosystem assessment and targeted management for enhanced carbon sequestration, biodiversity and water quality ¶
ForPeat focuses on optimizing the management of forested peatland through innovative, science-based methods. It showcases sustainable forest practices and nature restoration on peat soils, emphasizing rewetting and water conservation. These efforts serve as Living Labs, balancing climate positivity with biodiversity enhancement. A key focus is assessing carbon sequestration benefits, nutrient cycles, sediment movement, dissolved organic carbon, and biodiversity. The project explores scalability and financial incentives within the EU framework and will provide recommendations for policymakers and land managers. Collaboration among landowners, foresters, scientists, public authorities, and industry ensures a comprehensive, inclusive approach for a sustainable future. WSL will mainly work on harvesting of forests on peatland and develop a productivity model that allows estimating productivity and costs associated to harvesting operations in peatland.
