Ven-TI: Monitoring post-disturbance dynamics following windthrow in Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests in the Canton of Ticino: effects of post-disturbance management

Forests in the Canton of Ticino play a key role in protecting people and infrastructure from natural hazards while providing a wide range of ecosystem services. However, they are becoming increasingly vulnerable to extreme events associated with climate change. Existing knowledge on post-disturbance management is often based on studies from regions with different environmental conditions and cannot be directly transferred to the forests of Ticino.

The Ven-TI project monitors forest regeneration and stand structure in 41 permanent plots established in areas affected by the October 2023 windstorm. The aim is to document post-disturbance forest dynamics and understand how forest regeneration develops in relation to post-disturbance management and residual deadwood.

The results will enable different management approaches to be compared, identify their strengths and limitations, and provide a scientific basis for future decisions aimed at promoting climate-resilient forest management.

August 2026: We are out in the field to expand the network of permanent monitoring sites.
