Sealed surfaces heat up our urban areas, prevent rainwater infiltration, and leave little room for nature. Removing these surfaces, by contrast, creates space for plants, water, and healthy soil—making a tangible contribution to climate adaptation.
This is where the "Asphaltknackerinnen" (Asphalt Breakers) come in: working alongside private individuals, cities, and municipalities, they break up unnecessarily sealed surfaces and transform them into green, permeable, and diverse spaces. Isabella Sedivy offers an insight into the project’s structure and methods.

Versiegelte Flächen heizen unsere Siedlungsräume auf, verhindern die Versickerung von Regenwasser und bieten wenig Raum für Natur. Entsiegelung schafft dagegen Platz für Pflanzen, Wasser und lebendige Böden – und ist damit ein konkreter Beitrag zur Klimaanpassung.
Da setzen auch die Asphaltknackerinnen an: Sie brechen gemeinsam mit Privaten, Städten und Gemeinden unnötig versiegelte Flächen auf und verwandeln sie in grüne, durchlässige und vielfältige Orte. Isabella Sedivy gibt Einblick in den Projektaufbau und die Methoden.
About the speaker ¶
Isabella Sedivy is a biologist with a passion for bringing biodiversity science into practice and making nature more visible in everyday life. After completing her studies, she spent two years as a scientific researcher at WSL before moving into science communication. She then worked for many years for SRF’s NETZ NATUR, communicating ecological topics to a broad audience. Today, she works at Plan Biodivers, focusing on biodiversity and climate adaptation in urban areas. Through the Asphaltknackerinnen initiative, she promotes the unsealing of paved surfaces and their transformation into biodiverse, climate-resilient spaces.
