Abstract ¶
Rivers and their riparian zones support both terrestrial and aquatic life, but are under heavy pressure from human activities. Today, most waterbodies are degraded in one or more ways, for example through channelisation, fragmentation or pollution. Plants are a fundamental component of rivers, lakes and their riparian zones, but also suffer from this degradation. They fulfil ecological functions, such as bank stabilisation and nutrient cycling, and provide food and habitat to a wide range of animals. In this talk, I will discuss the processes that shape riparian and aquatic plant communities, with a focus on hydrology and geomorphology as well as dispersal and environmental filtering. I will also present examples of river restoration and approaches that we use to study its effects on aquatic and riparian vegetation.
About the speaker ¶
Jacqueline Hoppenreijs is an ecologist with a special interest in streams and their plant communities. She worked as a junior researcher in invasion biology at Radboud University (the Netherlands) until starting her PhD on the ecology of riparian vegetation at Karlstad University (Sweden). After receiving her degree in 2024, she started a postdoc at the Institute of Geography at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germany), where she works on urban ecology and river restoration. She also enjoys teaching basic and advanced courses in ecology.

Biodiversity Seminars ¶
The WSL Biodiversity Seminar Series are organized by the WSL-Eawag Biodiversity Center. Every two weeks, we aim to host a seminar speaker who presents research or outreach on topics relevant to the biodiversity community at WSL. The seminars are public and are usually broadcast online.
