The Federal Office for the Environment, Biodiversity and Landscape Division, supports the project as part of its "Forest Biodiversity" strategy. The WSL has been responsible for data collection in the natural forest reserves and for data backup since 2008; the ETH and the WSL conduct research in cooperation with each other. An advisory group was formed in order to include the cantons (see below).
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to former project leader Peter Brang, who passed away unexpectedly in July 2022, for his tireless efforts in the Natural Forest Reserves project. Peter was a dedicated forest researcher and gifted scientist. He certainly earned his greatest merits at the interface between research and implementation in practice. It was always a matter of great concern to him that the research results obtained should lead to a meaningful application.
