Spatial planning instruments

The various levels of government - from the local to the national level - have a wide range of instruments at their disposal to manage spatial development. We investigate which instruments are used and how they work.

Spatial planning measures and instruments such as strategic concepts, zoning plans or density regulations are important tools for controlling settlement and landscape development. The instruments are constantly being adapted to changing society and environments. In this context, it is important to know under which conditions instruments produce satisfactory results and how measures can be sensibly adapted to local circumstances. A valuable basis for our research work is a survey from 2014, in which the deployment and date of implementation of 20 spatial planning measures and the associated administrative structures were surveyed in the Swiss municipalities.
