At the WSL Institute of Snow and Avalanche Research SLF we are investigating how the condition of permanently frozen soils in the mountains is changing.
On about five percent of Switzerland’s land surface, the temperature is constantly below zero. If these permanently frozen soils thaw, e.g. due to climate change, this can pose a threat to the people in the mountains as well as to structures built there. Our goal is to better understand processes and to detect dangers at an early stage.
