Reactive nitrogen at the Climate, Energy, Agriculture, water, and health Nexus
2023 - 2026
Cooperazione FinanziamentoJoint Initiative ECS 2022: ReCLEAN ¶
Fossil fuel combustion for energy production leads to nitrogen oxides emissions into theatmosphere. Together with ammonia emitted from agriculture and volatile organic carbonspecies, they are involved in forming ozone and particulate matter. The energy transitionhas a poorly understood impact on the complex N cycle in the connected atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic environments. Researchers have until now mainly focused onindividual compartments, thereby largely ignoring the impacts of changes in onecompartment on the others. The lack of an integrative multi-compartment research approachhinders a more proactive strategy for establishing predictive outcomes. This JointInitiative aims to holistically understand and quantify nitrogen fluxes across and withincompartments to predict the effects of energy transition and environmental changes fromother drivers and provide stakeholders and policymakers with the most informed possibleoutcomes of future scenarios and policy.
